Shanghai – Today a Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric vehicle joined the fleet of electric vehicles at the China Electric Vehicle International Demonstration Zone in Jiading district of Shanghai. China is one of the first global markets where the Volt will be sold through 13 specially selected dealerships in eight major cities.

Today’s Volt delivery is a follow-up to the letter of intent that GM signed on April 22 of last year. GM will provide the Volt for consumer test drives at the Electric Vehicle Demonstration Zone. Feedback on the driving and charging experience will be solicited to help GM improve the user experience as the company prepares to expand its offering of vehicles powered by electricity.

“GM has made electrification a key component of our strategy for the sustainable development of the automotive industry,” said Ray Bierzynski, executive director of electrification strategy for GM China. “The Volt is the first step on our path to electrification and working with the Electric Vehicle Demonstration Zone will help us learn how to meet consumer needs, assess infrastructure requirements and promote acceptance of this cutting-edge technology.”

At Auto Guangzhou 2011 in November, GM announced that the Volt would initially be sold in Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Wuxi, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Foshan through Shanghai GM Chevrolet dealerships at a retail price of RMB 498,000.

The Volt provides up to 80 kilometers of pure electric driving. With its onboard engine-generator, it has a total driving range of 570 kilometers in extended-range mode. It produces peak torque of 370 Nm and maximum power of 111 kW and has a 0-100 km/h time of about nine seconds along with a top speed of 160 km/h.

The Volt earned a five-star safety rating from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Its battery carries a warranty of six years/150,000 kilometers.

Volt buyers will be eligible to join the V+ Club. By calling a bilingual 24-hour hotline, members will receive one-on-one service. In addition, they will be invited to participate in a series of member activities that match their eco-friendly lifestyles.
